Release – Evocation I – The Arcane Dominion, 11th April
From – Switzerland
Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion is a concept album setting pure gaulish mythology into music.”. Except for “Sacrapos”, “Omnos” and “Voveso In Mori” all the lyrics on this album are original Gaulish texts, between 1600 – 2100 years old. They were discovered through diverse archeological excavations during the last two centuries. Such texts were usually inscribed in small zinc plates, pottery (such as plates, disks or bowls) or tiles.

“New wave of folk metal” claims the bands MySpace. If you head there now you can hear the music truly is folk metal, sounds great, such as the first track, ‘Blood Stained ground’ and ‘Grey Sublime Archon’, but the first release from the new album, ‘Omnos’, is unlike the other material, as this is from the new acoustic concept album.
It’s a good poppy track with a catchy chorus, but I far more prefer the ‘folk Metal’ material. Not simply because it is metal, I’m not that narrow minded, I feel the riff’s and structuring more pleasing, and are complimented well with the folk instruments such as pipes, fiddles and a hurdygurdy! But I do believe experimentation and change is a good thing and for a band to feel comfortable to branch out in new ways is admirable. Diversity is a great tool, I’d certainly try catch this band live!

Upon first listen, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stumbled across a Eurovision entry. ‘Omnos’ is a light, poppy, bop-along track from a band described as the “new-wave of folk metal”. After visiting their myspace page however, it becomes evident that this first offering from their new album is somewhat misleading, for Eluveitie are a more full on, heavy, ‘melodic metal’ band with undertones of folk.
This isn’t to say that ‘Omnos’ is a bad track, the fact that Eluveitie are able to offer up some versatility is a good thing and signals diversity within their talents. However, whether you like or dislike this track, I would definitely recommend sending you on your way to the band’s myspace page so you can sample what Eluveitie are really all about.
