Darkness Over Xmas tour 2009When: 27-12-2009
Location: Entrepot in Bruges, Belgium
lineup:
- Deadlock
- Swashbuckle
- Dark Tranquility
- Heaven Shall Burn
- Caliban

First something about the venue Entrepot, quite simply the nicest venue I’ve been to for a metal gig. Two levels that both have a great view on the moderate sized stage.

Soon after I arrived and got myself some refreshment Deadlock kicked of the night, although I wasn’t impressed with them at first, once they were halfway through the second song Code Of Honor their sound and vocals got to a level I expected and like from this band. Deadlock is a five-piece featuring 2 vocalists, one female singing clean and a male growler that take turns. Something I can only cheer for, if done properly.  Although the growls were the least best I heard that night, great guitar parts and the girl did great and even held it together doing an a-capella outro. A nice feature was the started and ended with some electronic techno whatever.

In the same vain as Deadlock, we got greeted by Swashbuckle while a hip-hop song was playing. It’s for once quite simple to explain what this band is like. Imagine angry pirates doing thrash metal. None of that glam/power whatever Alestorm seem to be selling as pirate-metal but brutal and tight thrashmetal. This four-piece, Singer/Bassist, Backingvocals/Guitarist, drummer and a parrot were all dressed up as pirates with made the whole thing complete. This band is just a load of fun. However, their sound wasn’t that good at all, not compared to the other bands that night anyway. They seemed to be the only band without their own soundtech and roadie crew and maybe they just don’t care. But I’d have loved more definition coming from that guitar and bass.

Next, melodeath metallers Dark Tranquillity were up. As one of the pioneers of the Gothenburg metal genre it’s hard not to expect a tight and well performed set. I truly enjoyed DT, and I was quite suprised, impressed even with the vocals. They seemed even more harsh and brutal than on album. DT also played a tune from their upcoming album We Are The Void and it was possibly the best song I’ve heard that night.

I didn’t know too much about Heaven Shall Burn all I did have was a coversong they did on that Century Media covers album. Anyway, I soon got a great vibe from this band. They seemed to have a style and sound very alike the HxC scene we have here in Belgium more specifically the H8000 scene. I used to listen to nothing but these kind of hardcore/metalcore type bands so I’m quite glad I learned about Heaven Shall Burn. They announced somewhere in their set how much they loved playing for the scene where they got inspired by, mentioning bands such as Liar and Congress. The band I knew least about turned out to be the one I enjoyed most.

And lastly was it time for Caliban. I just said how I used to listen to nothing but hxc and metalcore, well Caliban was one of those bands. I admit I lost touch with the band when I turned to listening to many more different genres within metal. On the other hand, it turned out not to be such a bad thing after all. I only vaguely recognized one song but worst of all, they didn’t sound anything like how I came to love em. I still enjoy listening to the albums Vent and Shadow Hearts but I can’t say I liked them much on the Darkness Over Xmas tour.

All in all, it was a very good night out for me except for the looong walk home.

Ostend PowersWith the slogan, “support your locals” in my head I’ve gone out to pick up this album of this local band that was just released. Few months ago I’ve seen Ostend Powers perform on Zandrock festival. And back then I had expected a bit more of the band in terms of performance. But what the band managed to burn on a shiney plastic disc is beyond my expectations.

Other than it is a great debut album, it takes either guts or indifference to debut a Nu- or Crossover-Metal album little before 2010. It even got a “hidden” track, something that once used to be so common. A long long time ago, when I first saw these guys perform, they even had a scratcher. Now there sound has evolved a little over the years, it’s still nu-metal, it still sounds like Deftones, Lost Prophets, Incubus and even some Limp Bizkit. That is to say, vocals ranging from rapping to clean melodics and backing grunts. Supported by 2 7-string guitars, good drumming and a very prominent bass-guitar.

Having seen the band perform for many years, I’m glad there are several new tunes but they haven’t forgotten to include some of their older work, the songs that made want to watch this band over and over again in the first place. Although I had to wait to the very end of the album, that is, the hidden track… to hear I believe their most well known song “Down With The Powers” which is a kickass song that can’t possibly be any more nu-metal .

The production of this album is of great quality, the sound is well balanced and has many layers. The hidden track even features a saxophone solo wich works suprisingly well. It’s hard to imagine this album as the debut of a local band I’ve know for years.

My only problem with it is the following, why did it take so long for Ostend Powers to release their debut?

If you are a fan of nu-metal, and the bands mentioned.. get this album, as non-Belgians this might be a bit hard, but it’s definately worth it.

System Divide - The CollapseSome discoveries are often forgotten about real fast, especially if it’s a new band that has little to show. Newly formed bands that capture your imagination but are then overshadowed by the loads of great albums beeing released these days.

System Divide is one of those for me, early this year while browsing Myspace I stumbled on this band fronted by a woman and a man. Which on its own are qualities that score high for me. But add their sound to it, as I’ll discribe as a mixture of melodic and extreme metal to it and you’ve got a hit in my book. Moreover, System Divide features members of  Aborted and ex-Distorted, a promising line-up that didn’t dissapoint when the EP named The Collapse was releasedin june. I’ve have high hopes for the early 2010 album Sterile.

2009It’s been quiet on Run With The Torch past few weeks, no excuses… I’ve just been a bit lazy. Anyway, I’ll make it up by writing more articles the coming. With the end of the year nearing fast it’s a perfect opportunity to go over my experiences in rock and metal this year.

First of all, for me 2009 was about two of the best festival experiences I’ve ever experienced. It beeing Graspop Metal Meeting in Belgium and Bloodstock Open Air in the England. As far as individual gigs go, this year hasn’t been too active, I’ve concentrated on festivals and I’m glad I’ve done so.

2009 in music preferation was a year of progressive music, prog-rock, progressive metal, expirimental and instrumental acts to name a few, Katatonia, Long Distance Calling, Animals As Leaders... Tech- and Math-metal went perfectly alongside it (SikTh, Gojira, Hacride). And especially the combination of Sludge and Progressive metal such as the incredibly popular Mastodon and Baroness. I’ve also rediscoverd Thrashmetal new and old acts, notably reasonably newcomers as Evile and good ol’ classics the likes of Onslaught and Anthrax.

I know I’ve been covering a lot, but comperatively with 2008, there was a good lack of metalcore and melodic death beeing played on my iPod. So was there little room for (hard)rock , though I’ve been focusing on Southern and Blues-rock more these last weeks.

Working to the end of the year I shall more frequently post my favourite albums of the year and other notable events and releases.
